I bought the 80/20 Running book and have been using Marathon L1 for Chicago in Oct. I can’t find a copy of the 2020 plan to compare it to what I have but it appears that there are some variations – where are these primarily? My training partner has the TP plan and we’ve noticed some small variations in the first couple of weeks so far but nothing significant. I’m trying to decide it I want to keep piecing together the workouts by downloading from the online library or not. TIA!

    N,

Thanks for reading our book! Nearly 10 years have passed since Matt published 80/20 Running, and we’ve completely re-written the run plans 4 times since then. I regret there is no change log, and I can’t specify the difference other than another 10 years of accumulated learning in running best-practices are now included in the new plans. The old book plans are great, the new plans are better.

Also note that the while the run workouts from the book are similarly named to the ones in the free run library, they are not the same workouts. Meaning, you can’t actually replicate the book plans using the library. See the full Q&A on that workout library page for a description and options.

Thank you – that’s helpful. If I buy the 80/20 training peaks plan/files, will I be able to print out the whole thing? I have a photocopy of the plan from the book up on my wall so that I can see what’s coming. I’m hoping I can do that with the new one. Thanks in advance!

    N,

Sort of. TrainingPeaks is a great platform, but they make it difficult to use the plan outside of their ecosystem (there is no print option, for example).

    There are two other options:

    1. Sync your TrainingPeaks calendar to an external calendar: https://help.trainingpeaks.com/hc/en-us/articles/204072184-Sync-your-calendar

    2. Export your plan to a CVS file and print it from there (use Workout Summary option) https://help.trainingpeaks.com/hc/en-us/articles/204985370-Data-Export
