I was looking at the training distribution of the training plan for the Olympic Triathlon and realized that there are a lot of workouts in high-intensity zones. When, for instance, counting two weeks of the plan, I would see 3 workouts including high intensity zones, and 3 workouts only in low intensity zones. When adding the time together, the sum will give 80/20, so perfect distribution. According to Seiler (which you quote sometimes here and there), the total number of workouts should amount to 20%. In the 80/20 training plans, it would rather be 50/50% when speaking of the number of workouts in the respective zones.
I am sure I am confusing something there, Hope you can help 🙂
Seiler’s work (and elite athletes) is an 80/20 split by duration, not frequency. 80% of your workout time should be easy, not 80% of your workouts.
Or, do a quick though experiment. If both 80% of duration and workouts had to be 80%, then 100% of each workout would have to be dedicated to either low or high intensity. No intervals, no mixing it up. A two hour ride would have to be 100% high intensity.
