    Hi, I want to run my first marathon on May 2021. I have run 1/2 marathon following Matt’s training programs and I will use his 18 week program as well. But the question is: how do I prepare for that program? I am running 4/5 days a week but without a guidance or purpose. How do I focus the previous months? I cannot do two programs one after the other, doesn’t look right. I understand 80/20 but I don’t know how to do it properly, I don’t want to be burnt out in the middle of the program, or bored.     There are about 44 weeks until mid-May, and you’re right, that is a long time still. Actually, we would recommend doing one program after another, but in a specific way.

    Break up the next 44 weeks into 3 distinct seasons:
    10 weeks Run Maintenance (free plan)
    – 1 week off
    – 15 weeks HM plan. Even if you do this event on your own, it gives you an anchor to work with and stay motivated.
    – 1 week off
    – 18 weeks Marathon plan.

    That takes you right to your marathon (assuming your marathon is May 16..just add or take off weeks from the Maintenance plan to adjust).
