I’m looking to plan my potential covid 2021 race season, so things will probably change but looking for the theoretical impacts I guess.

Currently on the L0 Ironman plan and hopefully signing up for a sprint triathlon 2 weeks before ironman race. Race season is limited up here in Canada and with Covid, there probably wont be too many options.

Would you advise against the race or putting a cap on effort level (i.e. Zone x,3 or 4). It will be on a Saturday, 2 weeks before an ironman race. So I would move the swim around, or try and get some extra laps in the water pre-race. I would still plan on keeping the critical CRa24 and brick the next day. I want to do the race for fun (with friends/family) and another practice for all the other supplementary (gear & transitions) stuff for the IM race.

I figured that the total volume impact isn’t that much that week, and would put an effort cap on myself, but how much could a 1.5hr race impact the body at that stage of training?

    Thanks for the great work!

@bigandtall We all just gotta believe things will be better in 2021 and we’ll get to race again.

OK, first, I’m glad to hear that you are still going to complete the brick workout that day. That is your last chance to gain new IM fitness so it’s an important workout.

I would cap the Sprint at Zone X in order for it not to interfere with that last crucial brick. An alternative is to do your brick on Monday of that week. You can then pound out the Sprint and still get in that last important brick. This works out really well if your IM is on a Saturday too. If your IM is on a Sunday, it still works, but maybe drop the brick bike back by 20 minutes.
