Iḿ using Level 1 Marathon for 2.10.2021 race (A). I have an idea that I will do cycling instead off all foundation runs (3 times/week) during summer months (June-august). I´d also like to participate some non competitive cycling events during July and august.
Cycling events are:
– 3.7. Hilly 150km (about 5hrs)
– 1.8. Flat 110km (about 3 hrs)
– 29.8. Flat 140km (about 4 hrs)
If I like to perform well in cycling events, I would need to do at least one longer bike session/week and maybe some faster rides during each week. How should I adjust my marathon plan to fit long weekend rides with weekend long run? During my summer holiday July I can do long cycling workouts also in the middle of the week.
I think 29.8. Sunday 140km ride most problematic because there is 27km long run in same weekend.
Is some way to do this or should I just skip the idea participating the cycling events because marathon is still my main goal?
Unless the overall training load of the Level 1 plan is extremely easy for you, I don’t see how you can have it both ways. I think you should either do the best you can in the cycling events on limited bike training and/or just do the shortest event. Once you start replacing key run workouts with rides, your marathon preparation will take a hit.
It is possible in principle to train simultaneously for running and cycling events, but it really requires that your entire plan be build around this agenda. Retrofitting a (relatively low-volume) marathon plan for this purpose is not the way to go.
