I am currently headed into week 15 of the level 2 Olympic Distance plan and need to rest a sore leg. Should have X-Ray results tomorrow to confirm it is not a stress fracture. Assuming that is the case, any suggestions on how to plug in additional bike workouts to supplement my lack of running? I really don’t want to miss my MOTUS race in 5 weeks even if it means my run legs aren’t perfect!

Your best bet is to replace runs with a weight-bearing nonimpact activity such as elliptical running rather than with additional cycling, if possible. It’s tricky with bone injuries, but the first thing to go when you stop running is the ability to withstand repetitive impact. Preserving that is as important as preserving run-specific fitness.

Good news is that I don’t have a stress fracture. I also did my Tuesday run on grass and a cinder track and that helped as well. Guess I will do everything I can to avoid running on roads for the next few weeks and keep plugging away.

Do you have treadmill access? That’s a pretty forgiving surface. And if you run on an incline you can further reduce impact forces.

I have a strong disdain for any treadmill running past about 30 minutes. Besides my next race I am prepping for is an offroad triathlon in the MOTUS series so I need to spend more times on the trails and off roads.
