I got the 70.3 Run HR, Cycle Power plan.
I’m struggling to understand how to cycle in the power zones when my area where I ride has lot of hills. When ever I go uphill the power generated is always high, while going downhill the power is low. Am I doing something wrong?
Is the aim to get the average power in the right zone for the period rather than a constant sustained power?
Riding outdoors on hilly terrain can be tricky when trying to also follow a training plan. My advice is to as much as possible stay with the zones prescribed for the workout you are following, but understanding that power will fluctuate over terrain. As you mentioned if you can keep that average power in the right zone for the workout or the interval then that will still give you a good training effect. Main thing is to not overdo it on hills (ie don’t attack the hill) when doing your foundation and recovery rides. Ride nice and steady and maintain a good cadence, watching your power and your heart rate is a good way to ensure you are riding steady and not overdoing things on any hills.
…and, check your gearing. If you are constantly training in hills, consider a crank/cassette combo that is more appropriate for hills. The ability to control intensity between an 11-21 cassette and a 12-28 cassette is significant.
