When the plan says x yards in zone 1, x yards in zone xyz, etc, are you supposed to do the entire yardage in one go no rest? For instance one of my swims is 300 yards z1, 1650 yards zone 2. Is it expected to do the entire 1650 with no breaks?

There is no reason you can’t break that 1650 up into 100’s, 150’s etc with a short break (5-10 seconds only), as long as you keep the effort in Zone 2 throughout and don’t over-extend the zones . If you are are a developing swimmer you can even consider adding in swim aids such as the snorkel or pull buoy in these zone 2 workouts to get the conditioning whilst also working on your swim form and posture.
