Hope everybody is doing well today! The 80/20 running book suggests taking a 2 week break from training every 24 weeks or so. This is weird, but I’ve only been running since the spring of 2018. I’m sure I’ve ever made is 24 weeks without getting injured and having to stop running for at least 2 weeks. So I don’t think I’ve ever had to worry about implementing the break.
This time, I’ve made some changes that have really helped. I’m 21 weeks into running again and I feel amazing. No injuries or ever warning signs. This is by by far the best training cycle I’ve ever had. I’m planning to run a Thanksgiving Day half marathon. The race be exactly 26 weeks since I started back to running. Ok it’s a little more than 24 weeks, but hopefully that’s close enough.
Anyway, whenever you take your 2 week break, do you make it a complete break from any sort of working out? No walking (other than what’s absolutely necessary), easy treadmill, light resistance training, core, etc? Or just nothing that’s hard? I’m not sure I’ll know what to do with myself if I cut all working out for 2 weeks. But if it’s truly beneficial, I’ll take the complete break.
I myself never went longer than two days without exercise. Your two-week “break” can take any form you like as long as your overall activity level is low enough that it’s not standing in the way of deep physical and mental regeneration.
