Thanks for all the work you do to maintain this site and your training programs, it’s much appreciated.
I’m planning to run an ultramarathon this coming weekend, and have read your articles on race pacing (like this one: https://www.8020endurance.com/race-pacing/) with interest. But the ultra I’ll be competing in will be across a wide range of elevations and terrain, making pacing difficult. What’s your recommendation? Ignore pace and/or power, and run by feel?
Hi Kiff,
I recommend using RPE (feel) for pacing for ultra’s, especially when your race has a wide range of elevations and terrain. Be sure to make the first few hours feel really good, stay on top of nutrition, and make smart decisions on how to tackle up and downhill sections in order to allow you to maintain a steady effort throughout the race and not fade out due to overdoing anything.
