“We tend to want to do the exceptional things, exceptionally well, but the basic things only basically well.”
– Bill Sweetenham
Master the Basics To Unlock the Exceptional as an Athlete
If you’re chasing big goals—Kona, Boston, a sub-5 70.3—you probably don’t lack ambition. But high performance isn’t built on exceptional workouts alone. It’s built on doing the basics better than anyone else.
Before you look for the next training hack, ask yourself: Am I nailing the fundamentals? In this blog, I will walk you through the 10 fundamentals you should focus on if you want exceptional days. In addition, I’ll provide examples of a few athletes who master the basics better than most.

While his talent is undeniable, Pogačar’s edge comes from fundamental strengths: smart race tactics, year-round aerobic conditioning, and exceptional recovery habits. His approach balances intensity with easy days, proving he knows when to push and when to rest.
Katie Ledecky (Distance Swimming)
A dominant force in distance freestyle, Ledecky’s success stems from disciplined training, technical efficiency, and razor-sharp focus. She rarely misses a session, prioritizes sleep and nutrition, and sticks to the basics—lap after lap, year after year.
