Half marathoners on 80/20

Runners on our Wall of Fame have taken as much as 33 minutes off their half marathon best using 80/20.

  • “Absolutely loved the plan. It has allowed me to cut almost 8 1/2 minutes off my half marathon PB. The workouts were varied and fun (well sometimes fun in a brutal way haha) and I got great support from David when I had any questions about the plan. Would recommend unreservedly.”

Why 80/20 works for the half marathon

Easy runs get no respect, and most runners do them too fast. That leaves you tired for the sessions meant to make you faster. An 80/20 plan keeps about 80 percent of your running at low intensity, so the hard 20 percent genuinely counts. Every run lands on your TrainingPeaks calendar with your zones built in, a coach answers your questions by email, and Team 80/20 includes all three plans on this page.

Easy runs contribute more to race-day performance than any other run you do, yet they are the runs most often done wrong. Run them too fast and you build a chronic load of fatigue that holds back your fitness and blunts the sessions meant to be hard. Run them by feel, slower on tired days, and they keep your training close to your limit without going over it.

The same honesty pays off when you set your race goal. Matt's advice is to aim for the pace you can sustain now, not a round number, and to prove it in goal-pace workouts before race day. Then the plan's taper eases your training load over the final two weeks so you arrive fresh. There is more in our running articles.

What a week looks like

Take a typical Level 1 week. Day 1 is your rest day and Day 7 usually carries the long run, which is set by distance rather than time. Most of the other runs are easy, and their pace should move with how you feel that day rather than hold to a number.

The faster work comes in sessions such as Fartlek Runs, which bring modest doses of speed into base training, Steady State Runs, which spend a controlled stretch in Zone X, and Progression Runs, which teach you to run faster on tired legs. Every rest week includes a test, so your zones keep up with your fitness, and every run syncs from TrainingPeaks to most watches.

Half marathon training plan questions

How many weeks is a half marathon training plan?

All three of our half marathon plans run 15 weeks at every level, finishing with a taper that eases your training load over the final two weeks. Our race season guide puts a tune-up 10K in week 12. If your race is closer than 15 weeks, email a coach before you start and we will tell you where to begin.

How many hours a week do I need to train for a half marathon?

On the 80/20 Half Marathon plan your weekly running averages 3.8 hours at Level 0 and 8 hours at Level 3, with peak weeks of about 6 to 10 hours. Matt's rule is to train at the highest volume at which you consistently feel good, so pick the level whose average you can hold most weeks.

Is there a half marathon training plan for beginners?

Yes. Level 0 is built for first-timers and low-mileage runners, with five runs in a typical week and two days off. Marco Saraceno came back after years away from running and finished a first half marathon on an 80/20 plan. If you are torn between two levels, start lower, and if it turns out wrong we switch you at no cost.

Should I train by heart rate, pace or power for a half marathon?

Any of them works, and the 80/20 and Masters plans also come in an RPE version for running by feel. Pace is the most race-relevant measure and the easiest way to rehearse your goal pace, but it stops being reliable on hills. Heart rate is a useful check on easy days, though it lags behind changes in effort and drifts with heat and fatigue.

What if I miss a week of half marathon training?

Pick up the schedule where you are rather than trying to make the runs up. That holds for a missed run or two when you are healthy. After a longer gap, especially for illness or injury, ease back in over a few days first. If the plan no longer fits, email a coach and we can move you to another level.

Does it include strength training?

Not in the plan itself. Strength comes as a separate Half Marathon Strength Training Plug-in, matched to your level and to the plan's 15 weeks so the sessions fit around your key runs. For a fuller gym program there is Half Marathon Premium Strength. Team 80/20 includes both, along with every other 80/20 plan.

Training for a marathon after this? Team 80/20 includes every 80/20 plan, so this half, the marathon after it and the strength plug-ins for both come with one membership, backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee.
