What Is a Good Half Ironman Time? Average 70.3 Finish Times and Splits

By David Warden
Athlete exiting water at triathlon event

The short version. A good half Ironman time depends on where you start. The average finish is a little over six hours, and the spread is wide. Under seven hours is a solid first 70.3. Under six is a strong age-group result. Under five puts you near the front of most age groups, and the pros finish in under four. A typical mid-pack day is a 40 minute swim, a three hour bike at 18 mph, and a two hour ten minute run at ten minute miles, with about ten minutes in transition. Course, weather and your own history move all of those numbers by half an hour or more.

Average half Ironman times

Across large 70.3 fields the overall average sits between six hours and six and a quarter, with men averaging a little under six and women a little over. Those averages hide a long tail. Most races close the course at eight and a half hours and a meaningful share of the field uses most of it. The table shows what the three legs typically look like at different finish times on a flat to rolling course in good weather.

Finish Swim 1.2 mi Bike 56 mi Run 13.1 mi Who
Under 4:30 28 to 32 min 2:15 to 2:25 at 23 to 25 mph 1:25 to 1:35 Pros and the very top age groupers
4:30 to 5:00 30 to 35 min 2:25 to 2:40 at 21 to 23 mph 1:35 to 1:45 Age-group podiums, world championship qualifiers
5:00 to 5:30 33 to 38 min 2:40 to 2:55 at 19 to 21 mph 1:45 to 2:00 Strong, experienced age groupers
5:30 to 6:30 36 to 45 min 2:55 to 3:20 at 17 to 19 mph 2:00 to 2:25 The middle of the field
6:30 to 7:30 42 to 50 min 3:20 to 3:50 at 15 to 17 mph 2:25 to 2:50 Many first-timers
Over 7:30 50 min plus 3:50 plus 2:50 plus Finishing is the goal, and it counts

Add 8 to 12 minutes for the two transitions. The bike is where the biggest time differences live, because it is the longest leg and the one where fitness, equipment and pacing all show. The run is where the race is usually lost, because a bike ridden ten minutes too fast costs twenty on the run.

What is a good half Ironman time for a first race?

Finishing under seven hours is a good first 70.3 for most people who train consistently for four to five months. Our coaches’ rule of thumb is that a reasonably fit athlete who follows an 80/20 half Ironman plan at Level 0, the lowest-volume level, and does the long sessions comes in under seven on a typical course. Athletes with a background in one of the three sports, and the hours for Level 1 or Level 2, usually land between five and a half and six and a half on a first attempt. A second 70.3 on the same training is often 20 to 30 minutes faster, because pacing, transitions and nutrition all improve with one race of experience.

What decides your time

  • The bike course. Flat and sheltered versus hilly and windy is a half hour swing on its own. Read the elevation profile before you set a goal.
  • Heat. A hot run adds minutes per mile. Hold the effort, let the pace go.
  • Bike pacing. The most common mistake in the sport. Ride the first half of the bike at an effort that feels too easy and the run will thank you.
  • Nutrition. Sixty to ninety grams of carbohydrate an hour on the bike, practiced in training. Under-fueling shows up at mile eight of the run.
  • Training history. Years in the sport matter more than hours this season. Experienced athletes go faster on less.

How to set a goal time

Do not pick a number and reverse-engineer the splits. Take your recent swim, bike and run fitness, set a pace for each leg that you can hold with margin, add them up with ten minutes of transitions, and that is the goal. Set your zones for each sport first with the 80/20 Zone Calculator and race the bike in Zone 2 with a little Zone 3, and the run by effort. The triathlon intensity guidelines explain how.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average half Ironman time?
A little over six hours for the whole field, with men averaging just under six and women just over. The middle of most races finishes between five and a half and six and a half hours.

What is a good half Ironman time for a beginner?
Under seven hours. Under six and a half is a very good first race. Most first-timers who follow a structured plan for 16 to 20 weeks land in that range.

What is the average bike speed in a 70.3?
About 17 to 19 mph for the middle of the field, giving a bike split of three hours to three hours twenty. Strong age groupers ride 20 to 22 mph, pros 24 mph and up, on a flat course.

What is the average 70.3 run pace?
Around 10 minutes per mile for a mid-pack finisher, which is a 2 hour 10 minute half marathon off the bike. Most athletes run 60 to 90 seconds per mile slower than their open half marathon pace.

How long does it take to train for a half Ironman?
Fourteen to twenty weeks on 8 to 12 hours a week for most athletes with a base in at least one sport. The 80/20 half Ironman plans run 18 to 21 weeks from about six hours a week at Level 0 to eleven at Level 3.

Which plan level gets me to my goal time?
Level 0 for finishing comfortably under seven. Level 1 or 2 for the five and a half to six and a half range. Level 3 for athletes chasing a podium or a championship slot. Every level is included in Team 80/20, and the best triathlon distance article helps if you are not sure the 70.3 is the right race yet.
