Scams, Safety, and “Sure-Things” in the Endurance Supplements World

The supplement world is a strange mix of useful tools, expensive “maybe” products, and marketing that’s designed to bypass your critical thinking.

For endurance athletes, the stakes are higher than wasting money. Poor-quality supplements can create real health risks, and in some cases even lead to banned-substance positives due to contamination or mislabeled ingredients. That’s why a smart supplement strategy starts with one goal:

Reduce risk first. Then, and only then, consider potential benefit.

That risk/benefit lens is consistent with how major sports medicine and sport nutrition bodies frame supplement use in high-performance sport.

Below is a practical guide you can use as an athlete—or as a coach working with athletes—to avoid scams, improve safety, and focus on the few areas that tend to offer the clearest upside.


Part 1: The “Scam Pattern” Checklist (how hype usually works)

Most supplement marketing falls into repeatable patterns. If you can recognize the patterns, you can save a lot of money (and headaches).

1) The miracle claim

If a product promises dramatic transformation—fast fat loss, instant endurance, huge VO₂ gains—assume it’s exaggeration until proven otherwise.

Coach filter: “If this worked as well as the ad suggests, it would be standard practice across elite sport.”

2) The “secret” ingredient or proprietary blend

“Proprietary blend” often means you don’t know what dose you’re getting—or whether it’s enough to matter.

Red flag: a long ingredient list with no clear dosing.

3) The single study screenshot

A claim supported by one cherry-picked study, animal research, or a non-athlete population is not solid evidence. You want a pattern across multiple quality studies in athletes.

4) The influencer-to-checkout pipeline

If the pitch is: big promise → emotional story → limited-time discount → “buy now”… you’re looking at a sales funnel, not a coaching recommendation.


Part 2: The Safety Side (what can actually go wrong)

Even well-intentioned athletes can run into problems because the supplement industry is messy: inconsistent manufacturing, label inaccuracies, and contamination risk are real concerns in sport.

Practical ways to reduce risk

  • Choose third-party tested products when possible, especially if you compete in tested events or care about minimizing contamination risk. NSF Certified for Sport® is one well-known example used in sport contexts.

  • Avoid “kitchen sink” formulas (pre-workouts with 25 ingredients, fat burners, “test boosters”). More ingredients = more unknowns.

  • Be cautious with international resellers or unclear sourcing.

  • Keep it simple: fewer products, fewer problems.

Coach tip: Have athletes keep a “supplement log” (product, dose, date started, why they’re taking it). If something causes GI issues, sleep disruption, anxiety, or odd HR changes, you can troubleshoot fast.


Part 3: A simple decision framework (use this every time)

When considering any supplement, ask these five questions:

  1. What problem are we solving? (energy availability, hydration, low iron, sleep?)

  2. Can food and training fix this first?

  3. What’s the evidence quality? (multiple studies, athlete-relevant outcomes?)

  4. What’s the safety and contamination risk?

  5. What’s the minimum effective dose—and is this product actually providing it?

If you can’t answer these cleanly, it’s usually a “no” or “not yet.”


Part 4: What “sure things” usually look like (the boring basics that win)

When athletes say “supplements,” they often mean pills and powders. But some of the most consistently useful “performance supplements” are simply sports nutrition products that help you execute training better: carbs, fluids, sodium/electrolytes, and protein in convenient forms.

Beyond that, a few ingredients have stronger bodies of evidence than most—but they still depend on the athlete, context, dose, and tolerance. For example, position stands note that caffeine can improve performance in many (not all) scenarios, with individual variation in response and side effects.

Another example: ISSN position stand work reviews creatine as one of the more supported ergogenic aids in sport contexts (especially for repeated high-intensity efforts), while also emphasizing appropriate use and context.

Key coaching point: “Evidence-backed” doesn’t mean “necessary.” It means “worth considering after training and nutrition fundamentals are handled.”


Part 5: What to do next (a smart athlete action plan)

If you want a supplement strategy that’s safe and effective, here’s the order of operations:

  1. Fix the basics first: fueling, hydration, sleep, training consistency

  2. Audit your current supplements: remove anything with unclear purpose/dose

  3. Reduce risk: choose third-party tested when it matters

  4. Trial one change at a time: small, trackable experiments

  5. Re-check every 8–12 weeks: if it isn’t clearly helping, drop it


If you’re an athlete: use this framework before you buy anything new.
If you’re a coach: teach athletes to slow down, ask better questions, and focus on fundamentals first—because that’s where most performance gains live.
