HYROX Run Training: The 80/20 Way

By Jim Vance

Is HYROX a strength sport or an endurance sport? Most athletes assume it’s the former — and most athletes are leaving performance on the table because of it.

In this Tuesday Teaching session, 80/20 Endurance co-founder and bestselling author Coach Matt Fitzgerald makes the case that HYROX is fundamentally an endurance race — and that the 80/20 training principle applies directly to how you should prepare for it.

What You’ll Learn in This Session

Matt covers the full picture of HYROX run training through the 80/20 lens:

  • Why HYROX is more endurance race than strength competition — with real heart rate data from a race winner to prove it
  • How the 80/20 training principle (80% easy, 20% hard) applies directly to HYROX preparation
  • The 3 types of runs every HYROX athlete needs: foundation runs, quality runs, and compromised runs
  • How to structure a 12-week HYROX training plan — from beginner to advanced double-day schedules
  • Pacing strategy for race day
  • How to retrofit an existing 80/20 run plan for HYROX training

HYROX Is an Endurance Sport — Here’s the Data

Matt shares race data from Skyler Allen, a competitive HYROX athlete who regularly medals and has qualified for Worlds. Looking at her heart rate across all 8 runs and 8 stations, the picture is clear: she hovered at or above threshold for virtually the entire race.

Strip away the labels, and it looks like a hilly half marathon.

That’s the point. If you want to perform well in HYROX, you need to train like an endurance athlete first — with an unusually strong strength emphasis layered on top.

The 3 Runs HYROX Athletes Need

1. Low-Intensity Runs (80% of your training time)

Foundation runs, recovery runs, and endurance runs form the backbone of your HYROX run training — the same bread and butter as half marathon training.

2. Quality Runs (the 20%)

Hill reps, threshold runs, and race pace runs. The most fun — and necessarily the smallest portion of your week.

3. Compromised Runs

The HYROX-specific training tool: alternating run intervals with station work to simulate race conditions. These become the focus in the final weeks before race day.
